Opinions on 500 mile break in service

Depends on where you live.
I know here in Aus, if a mechanic never services your bike/car, they can make it hard for you to get warranty claims through sometimes (but not always).
I took mine in at 800kms because I had a couple of other things I needed them to fix at the same time.

No consumer laws protecting you against "dealer lock-in" in Oz?

(realizing even if there we, goodwill goes a long way)

there is - have edited my post to clarify.
you are not required to go to the dealer that sold you your bike/car to get it serviced. But if you don't ever have your bike/car serviced by a registered mechanic and only do work at home, there can be a claim that it was not taken to a professional and someone without qualifications has made modifications/serviced the vehicle.
so no you don't have to go back to that specific dealer but you need to take it to someone qualified every now and then
