Tail Tidy Wire Harness Re-routing

Hello All,

So I had some more misfortune. This time in the electrical department. I recently installed the Toce fender eliminator and turn signal grab handles on my bike.

The day after I installed them I went on about a 200 mile ride. When I was around 80 miles from home, all of my electronics stopped working...display, turn signals, horn, starter. Luckily the bike still ran and I got it home. I checked my fuses and I had blown the lighting fuse. I replaced this fuse and everything worked again.

Then next day I went for a ride, and it happened again. This time, after I replaced the fuse, the license plate lights wouldn’t work. Well, I checked the wire harness and there was a big hole rubbed in it. This has got to just be my dumb luck because I rerouted that wiring the same way everyone else does for fender eliminators on this bike.

I put everything back to stock and have an appointment at the dealer in a week. I’m praying that Indian will cover the harness under warranty because that’s a huge bill and I’ve only had the bike for 4 months.

Now I have to decide if I want to put all that stuff back on after the bike is fixed. If anyone has some pics or tips for rerouting that wiring, it’d be appreciated.

Thanks!

You can always repair the harness. No need to buy a new one. These vids show how you should route it.

Thats true. I actually watched those videos and even a couple more, before I installed the fender eliminator. That’s why I said it’s probably just bad luck on my part. Nothing was pulled too tight or rubbing on anything that I noticed.

Thanks for the reply!

Based on your last pic. The harness wasn’t routed correctly up into your subframe.

Oh sorry for the confusion. I took that pic after I put all the factory parts back on. I did not even notice that issue until after I pulled the wire back down. I wish I would’ve taken more pics with the fender eliminator on so I could see what it was rubbing on.

My guess, the chain right here. If the loop wasn’t tight if could have drifted down. Only thing that would cause rubbing Iike that

Yeah, it was definitely the chain. I bet it got wedged in this gap between the chain and the frame. Damn

If the dealership won't cover it or see your admission on an open forum, as Ferraiolo justifiably said, a decent electrician should be able to easily repair the damaged portion no problem at all with the correct tooling and by using low profile hermetically sealed splices if needed?

Ha that’s true. Probably my bad. Thanks for the advice! Maybe I should have this thread deleted lol.

I can if you want. But the dealer is instantly going to know what happened.

this will show others to make sure that main piggy tail is tucked up nicely.

I’ve seen where even dealers did this.

ferraiolo1 is right. I found one of my stock rear turn signal harnesses was pinched on the rear fender arm assembly when I took it apart, and it had a nick in the insulation down to the bare wire. Since I was replacing the turn signals with the clear lens type anyway I didn't get too upset, but it could have been a potential short / open circuit. I'm not sure if that part was assembled at the factory or by the dealer out of the crate.

Decided to further investigate the frayed harness as I was reading up on the bikes warranty and realized there was NO way that this issue would be covered. Turns out only 1 wire was damaged so I clipped it, soldered it and put shrink tubing over it. Then I got a bigger gauge shrink tube, put it over the frayed part of the harness, and shrank it down. Then I zip tied each end of that tubing for good measure.

I also decided to route the wiring a different way to keep it as far from the chain as possible. There is actually a decent little gap underneath the side panel. It just needs to be removed, the wires set, then put back on. It’s like 12 bolts, but really not that bad.

Fingers crossed i have no more issues with this.

The slim euro signals would look good
Think I’m gonna get 2 sets of these.
Might seem counterproductive not just getting the NRC fender eliminator, but there’s just something about it I’m not sold on.

Hmmm I made the same mistake but I was lucky enough to spot it on the shake down ride. So I pulled it apart rerouted it, cable tied it and away we go, the chain just touched the sleeve over the harness...IMG_20201013_193414.jpg
I chose to remove the side panel too for ease of access and to reduce the risk of pinching or grazing the loom. IMG_20201013_202657.jpg

I made the mistake of going on a long ride right after I finished installing everything or I may have been able to catch it before all the damage. I think my repair will last though. Taking off the panel and keeping the wires far away from the chain definitely seems like the best move. (y)

What kit did you use for the rear turn signals? Thanks in advance

I just ordered the grab handles with the integrated turn signal brackets. They normally come with the Indian OEM fender eliminator, but you can order the grab handles separately.

The part numbers are:
5142699-458
5142700-458

Your Indian dealer can order them or you can get them from here:
